Bridging ancient wisdom and modern technology to explore the patterns of change

The Wisdom of Uncertainty

Life is a constant flow of change. Sometimes clear, often turbulent, and always moving. For over three millennia, the I Ching—the Book of Changes—has served as a map for this flow, providing seekers with a way to navigate life's transitions with grace and insight.

Cleromancer is a modern vessel for this ancient tradition. It is designed not as a fortune-telling machine, but as a tool for deep self-reflection, helping you pause, center your intention, and listen to the subtle patterns of your own life.

3,000 Years of Synchronicity

The I Ching originated in the shamanic traditions of early China, evolving from simple bone oracles into the sophisticated philosophical system we know today. It has influenced legendary thinkers from Confucius and Lao Tzu to modern pioneers like Carl Jung, Philip K. Dick or Terence McKenna.

Jung famously coined the term synchronicity—the idea of meaningful coincidences—to explain how the I Ching works. He believed that the hexagram generated at a specific moment reflects the quality of that moment, much like a photograph captures a scene. By consulting the oracle, you aren't changing the future; you are becoming conscious of the present.

Quantum Ritual: Tapping the Source

Traditional I Ching consultation involves the ritualistic casting of yarrow stalks or coins. This physical act is the bridge between the seeker's intention and the oracle's response. In the digital age, we've replaced mechanical chance with something even more fundamental: Quantum Randomness.

Cleromancer uses true quantum entropy, derived from the fundamental unpredictability of the universe via the University of Colorado randomness beacon (CURBy). This isn't just a computer algorithm; it's a digital ritual that ensures every reading is as unique and authentic as a physical toss of the coins.

The Mechanics of the Soul

The I Ching is built on 64 hexagrams, each a combination of six lines. These lines are either Yang (solid, active) or Yin (broken, receptive). Together, they represent 64 archetypal stages of change.

Think of a hexagram as a snapshot of your current situation. But because life is always moving, some lines may be Changing Lines (also called 'moving lines'). These represent the energy of transformation—points where things are currently shifting. In the I Ching tradition, these lines transform into their opposite to create a second 'Relating' hexagram, showing the future direction of your path.

Note: While Cleromancer currently focuses on the deep wisdom of individual changing lines, the visual display of the second hexagram is a planned feature (see Roadmap). However, our AI already considers these transformations to provide a complete picture of your inquiry.

In the traditional Three Coin Method, each coin has a value: Heads = 3 and Tails = 2. The sum of the three coins determines whether a line is stable or changing:

How a hexagram is built
Total SumCoin ResultLine TypeOutcome
63 TailsOld YinCHANGES into a solid line
72 Tails, 1 HeadYoung YangStable solid line
81 Tail, 2 HeadsYoung YinStable broken line
93 HeadsOld YangCHANGES into a broken line

6 and 9 are extreme states—energy at its peak, about to turn into its opposite. These are the dynamic points that reveal how your situation is evolving.

A Note for the Modern Seeker

Approach the I Ching with an open heart but a critical mind. The oracle provides images and metaphors, not commands. The true 'magic' happens in your own mind as you interpret these archetypes in the context of your life.

Use Cleromancer as a mirror. Sometimes it will confirm what you already know; other times, it will offer a perspective you hadn't considered. In both cases, the goal is the same: clarity, wisdom, and a deeper connection to the path you are walking.

Privacy & Encryption

We believe your spiritual journey should be private. Cleromancer is built with a privacy-first approach to ensure your reflections and questions remain yours alone.

Server-Managed Encryption — When private consultations are enabled, your intentions and interpretations are encrypted on the server. This ensures your data remains secure and private, accessible only to you across all your devices.

Data Ownership — You have full control over your data. Encryption is enabled by default to provide the highest level of security from your very first reading.

Why Use the I Ching?

The I Ching does not give simple yes-or-no answers. Instead, it offers images, metaphors, and wisdom that encourage reflection. By contemplating the response, you may discover new perspectives, inner clarity, or a deeper connection with the flow of life.

Whether for daily meditation, decision-making, or curiosity, this app makes the I Ching accessible and meaningful.

Support the Project

Cleromancer is a passion project created and maintained by a single person. While we offer a free tier, running this app comes with real costs:

Infrastructure — Storing your reading history and keeping the app online requires reliable database and hosting services.

AI Interpretations — Each AI-powered insight uses advanced language models, which incur usage costs.

Continuous Development — New features, bug fixes, and improvements take time and dedication.

If you find value in Cleromancer, consider supporting its development. Your support helps keep this project alive and growing.

A Note on Translations

Cleromancer currently draws from two of the most significant and respected sources for the I Ching: James Legge and Richard Wilhelm.

For the Wilhelm option, we have returned to his original German text. It is important to note that the English text here is a fresh, automated translation of Wilhelm's original German source, specifically commissioned for Cleromancer. This is not the famous 1950 Wilhelm-Baynes translation. Our goal is to provide a clear and accessible English version that remains faithful to Wilhelm's original German commentary while leveraging modern translation technology.

Quick Start: Consulting the Oracle

1

Preparation

Begin by quieting your mind. Find a space where you won't be interrupted, and take a few slow, deep breaths. The I Ching responds best to a state of calm, focused attention.

2

Forming an Intention

Ask a question that invites insight rather than a simple 'yes' or 'no'. Focus on your role in the situation. Instead of 'Should I take this job?', try 'What should I consider as I contemplate this career move?'

Ask about...Instead of...
Attitude & approachBinary predictions
Personal growthOthers' actions
The present momentThe distant future
3

The Quantum Ritual

Type your intention and click 'Consult'. Cleromancer will tap into a quantum randomness beacon to generate your unique hexagram. This is your digital bridge to the synchronized universe.

4

Observing the Lines

Pay close attention to any Changing Lines. These are the points of greatest tension and insight. They tell the story of your situation's evolution.
